Paving the way for 2019 to be regarded as the year of the dark mode, the latest Google Chrome 73 beta for Android has thrown some light on an early look of the popular mobile browser’s tentatively scheduled night-friendly viewing option.
However, the Android test is still in its nascent stages despite Google Chrome already revealing its plans to bring dark mode to its macOS and Windows 10 browsers. According to 9to5Google,“ the dark mode currently only appears in pop-up menus when Android 9 Pie’s ‘Night Mode’ is switched to ‘Always On’ in Developer Options.”
As opposed to their usual all-white design, a quick glance at the images below reveals the experimental dark mode turns pop-up menus dark grey.
Strictly going by these images, it’s very clear that Google Chrome for Android’s dark mode still has a long distance to cover in terms of user experience. Since the URL text still displays in black, it will be quite hard for users to read against a dark grey background.
As well as appearing in pop-up menus, the much fancied Google Chrome dark mode is also apparently absent from the rest of the app.
Speculation is rife that if a full-fledged dark mode for Google Chrome’s Android browser does go ahead, it is very likely to feature regular menus, navigation section, and address bar that will also receive the night mode treatment.
